David Stubbs has become the first ever Chartered Environmentalist of the Year. His award was confirmed on Tuesday night at the sustain’ Magazine Awards for Sustainability, Business & the Built Environment held at The Guoman Tower Bridge Hotel London. The new Award was introduced by Society for the Environment President Tony Juniper who delivered a passionate speech about the need for sustainability through environmental professionalism (watch Tony’s speech in the video above).
David Stubbs won the Chartered Environmentalist of the Year Award for his work with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) where his role was Head of Sustainability. David was responsible for integrating sustainability into LOCOG’s policies, procedures and processes to ensure that the venues, travel, food and waste operations at the Games were truly sustainable. He was also the official LOCOG spokesperson on sustainability issues and played a key role in promoting sustainability through the Games.
The inaugural Chartered Environmentalist of the Year award, sponsored by the Society for the Environment, recognised the work of individuals who have achieved high recognition in their specific field.
Upon receiving his award, David said: “I am honoured to receive this award and especially to be the first ever recipient. It was a huge privilege to have led the sustainability team at London 2012 and I consider this a tribute to their work and that of the extended body of sustainability professionals who put so much effort and initiative into delivering our sustainability programme. I hope the achievements and lessons learned from London 2012 will inspire others in our profession to build on the legacy.”
