From natural phenomenon to immense urban structures, the photographs featured in a new exhibition – From the Road (20th January to 17th March 2012, Eleven, London) – convey a strong sense of location. Carefully considering their environments, the artists capture an experience of being in a place. Their personal and evocative relationship with the space around them is articulated, revealing atmospheres from wonderment or adventure to solitude and loneliness.

Toned silver gelatin print, 30 x 30cm, Edition of 35
From the Road features Rob Carter, Harry Cory Wright, Rick Giles, Ken Griffiths, Paul Hill, Jane Hilton, Josef Hoflehner, Peter Newman, Sam Pelly, Wim Wenders and David Yarrow. The exhibition explores each artist’s unique and varied perspective of the environments which inspire them.
The works demonstrate both traditional and modern methodology in photography. Griffiths uses a specialised colour printing technique allowing immense depth and clarity to surface in his work while Newman adapts a vintage wide-angle lens to fit his high-tech digital camera.
Rob Carter, Traveling Still, Tulip Fields, Holland, XIV, 2006
Number 2 in an edition of 3, 41″ Square, Diasec mounted
The artists employ diverse techniques to capture the landscapes they discover. Cory Wright utilises a large format camera to precisely capture the world in front of him whereas Carter allows the exposure from a rotating lens to deconstruct the landscape, reducing the image to threads of colour and light. Conversely, Wenders and Hilton immerse themselves into documentary studies of landscape resulting in an intimate portrayal of culture as well as setting.

Carbro print, signed and dated on the verso, 85.5 x 101.5cm, Edition 1 of 6
This exhibition reflects the endless potential presented by a landscape to an artist. Here these possibilities are represented by a strong sense of location, expressed through a combination of the epic prospective as well as a reduction to the very essential elements offered by a scene.
