"When I joined BRE 10 years ago, sustainable design and construction were very much a fringe activity. BREEAM was still in its infancy and the main focus was on energy performance. How much has changed! ThereÕs now real market demand for green buildings, and the industry is responding with highly innovative solutions. "I'm particularly pleased that people are realising there's so much more to a sustainable building than its energy performance.

"At Inbuilt, I'm now dealing with projects that balance energy use alongside things like ecology, land use and water management together with, quality of life and wellbeing issues, such as; improved learning outcomes in schools, healing in hospitals, productivity in offices and safe and healthy homes. Over the next 10 years the big challenge will be to move beyond greenwash and tokenism to deliver genuine sustainability. Our experience to date clearly shows that, to achieve genuine sustainability, we have to adopt a whole system approach.

"We also need to provide a sound evidence base to demonstrate that green buildings pay, not only in terms of lower owning and operating cost, but also by delivering productive and healthy places and spaces fit for both people and the planet."
